Guide for Riders with Disabilities

New Castle Community Transit is committed to accessible, dignified service for every rider.

Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles: All buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts.

Fare Assistance: Passengers with a permanent or temporary disability may qualify for reduced fare. Contact the Business Office at (765) 521-6847 to confirm eligibility.

Requesting the Lift: Reservations are simple — follow the instructions in the Routes & Schedules section, and let the dispatcher know if you'll need the wheelchair lift when booking your trip. The lift is reserved for passengers with disabilities, including those using wheelchairs or scooters. Personal care attendants and service animals accompanying a qualifying rider may also use the lift.

Personal Care Attendants: Drivers are not permitted to assist passengers on and off the bus except through operation of the wheelchair lift. If your disability requires help with stairs or similar physical assistance, please bring a personal care attendant. Attendants ride at no charge when accompanying a rider who needs assistance.

Boarding the Bus

Follow these steps for a safe, smooth boarding experience:

  1. Let the driver know if you need the wheelchair lift, and mention if it's your first time using it.
  2. Stay at least 6 feet back from the door until the driver signals it's safe to approach.
  3. Wait for the driver's go-ahead before boarding the lift. If you use a wheelchair or scooter, board back-first — this is the safest boarding method. Make sure your brakes are set before boarding.
  4. Once you're securely on the lift, firmly grasp the handrail on each side while the lift operates. The driver will assist you into the bus.
