When You Must Appear
An order to appear in City Court is issued when a citation has not been satisfied within the required timeframe. Upon receiving a court notice, individuals must appear before the Judge to enter one of three pleas:
- Guilty: Admitting to the violation. Fines and court costs are assessed, and an order to remedy the violation within a specified time frame may be issued.
- No Contest: Accepting the consequences without formally admitting guilt. Fines, court costs, and any required remediation orders are assessed the same as a guilty plea.
- Not Guilty: Denying the violation. A trial date will be set (typically within 30 days). Individuals may represent themselves or hire an attorney, present witnesses, and provide evidence before the Judge makes a ruling.
Governance & Administration
The City Court Judge is an elected official with sole responsibility for managing court operations and establishing the department’s budget. Operating funds are provided through the city's General Fund, with annual appropriations approved by the City Council.
